Clinical training in the second year advances as each occupational therapy practice course is followed by two to three week fieldwork experiences in which students have hands-on practice with individuals, groups, and populations of all ages and in a variety of healthcare, social service, and educational settings. These Level I experiences are mentored by leading practitioners in occupational therapy and other disciplines serving community needs. Hands on opportunities in community organizations build students' leadership skills on their final fieldwork experience.

To complete the third and final year of entry-level study, students fulfill two three-month Level II fieldwork experiences to graduate. Here, students have the opportunity to choose the location and type of practice they wish to experience.

Curriculum is subject to change as directed by the department.

Upon graduation, students are eligible to take the examination by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After passing the Certification exam, graduates will be eligible to use the Registered Occupational Therapist (OTR) title. In addition, most states require licensure to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. A felony conviction may affect the graduate's ability to sit for the NBCOT Certification Examination or attain state licensure.

Additional Information

Graduation from program consists of successful completion of all didactic coursework and fieldwork experiences.  Students must complete a minimum of 24 weeks of Level II fieldwork within 24 months following completion of the didactic portion of the program.  For more information, please call the Occupational Therapy Admissions Office at (954) 262-1101 or 877-640-0218.
