DPT/MSSS Dual Degree

Overview

Nova Southeastern University offers students the opportunity to attain their Master of Science in Sports Science (MSSS) degree concurrently with their Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree.

Students may earn the Master of Science in Sports Science (MSSS) over the course of three years, by taking one MSSS course per semester and receiving credit in the MSSS program for some courses taken in the DPT program.

Students are eligible to begin the MSSS program on the recommendation of the PT Program Director after completion of the student's first semester.

Benefits of Concurrent Degrees

The DPT/MSSS degree combination prepares students with the knowledge and skills to utilize technology, collect research-based data and provide application in the sports performance field; while the online/onsite lab immerses students in breakthrough research on body composition, performance, sport neuroscience, biomechanics, supplements and elite athletics.

Students in the concurrent DPT/MSSS degree program complete coursework and clinical requirements to satisfy the requirements for each degree. DPT courses are scheduled during the day while MSSS courses are online with one virtual meeting Wednesday afternoon.  This provides students the opportunity to get ahead of trends in Collegiate and Professional sports.

With health/heat illness occurrences such as those of Damar Hamlin, Korey Stringer, and many others; collegiate and professional sports have turned to  medical professionals with sports science experience to lead their performance staff.  As an example, the Florida Panthers currently have a “Director of High Performance” who is both a Physical Therapist and Sports Scientist. Combined degree programs place NSU at the forefront of this emerging trend.

The MSSS program is 30 total credits and can be completed in 3 years. Six of the 30 credits are transferred from the DPT program.

Students are eligible to begin the MSSS program on the recommendation of the PT Program Director after completion of the student's first semester.
