Doctor Burnham graduated from the U.S. Navy Physician Assistant program in 1994 after serving a total of 21 years as a Hospital Corpsman, attaining the highest enlisted pay grade of Master Chief Hospital Corpsman. He was and still remains the only USN Master Chief to be accepted to the PA program. He continued to serve in the U.S. Navy as a navy PA for 10 more years. His PA bachelor's degree was from George Washington University. He then obtained his Master's degree in Family Medicine from the University of Nebraska and received his Doctor of Health Science degree from NSU in 2017.
While a PA in the USN, Dr. Burnham served in Connecticut in primary care, working with the submarine community. He then served at the Naval Undersea Medicine Institute which he was in charge of the Submarine Independent Duty corpsman school. He was charged with educating enlisted members in all aspects of primary care medicine to serve on board nuclear submarines. During his time in Connecticut he also worked as an Emergency Room PA. Dr. Burnham then transferred to the Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fl where he continued to treat the active duty population utilizing his area of expertise which is primary care medicine and family medicine. He was a member of a shock trauma medical platoon, during the invasion of Iraq. He participated in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom while assigned to the Second Marine Division. He was the triage officer and first responder for his shock trauma medical platoon, medically stabilizing and treating all casualties during the Iraq war. After a total of 31 years and 8 months on active duty he retired from the U.S. Navy and took a contract position with the navy as a civilian provider. He served in this position for 6 years.
Dr. Burnham joined the Faculty of Nova Southeastern University Physician Assistant program, Jacksonville campus, as an Assistant Professor, in August 2010. He brings knowledge of the primary care model of medicine to the program. He eagerly accepted the position in anticipation of sharing this knowledge. He is dedicated to giving the student that base knowledge of primary care to build on and to serve where ever the graduate would want to practice medicine. Dr. Burnham is very proud and honored to be a part of the NSU Team.
